England could face former winners in a Euro 2024 nightmare group when the draw is made at Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie concert hall today, but Gareth Southgate will reinforce his message that the competition will not be a success.
Southgate’s side are top in Pot 1 but there is a hangover among the teams in next summer’s final. With the seedings ranked by quality – rather than previous competitions – Italy is in the lowest pot. Denmark, winners of the 1992 finals, are in the second pot, while the Netherlands and Croatia are in Pot 3.
The measure of England’s progress under Southgate over the past seven years could be heard at staff meetings this season as players gathered at St George’s Park. The expectation is now to win the championship, regardless of who they are drawn against in the group stages.
Scotland will also be in the draw, and Wales will need to successfully battle through the rest of March’s games to secure their place at the Euros. A total of three teams will qualify through the play-offs to make the final 24 nations.
