UK weather – live: Arctic blast to bring snow as Met Office issues three-day warning

Arctic blasts are set to freeze the UK in early February as the latest weather map forecast shows when snow could strike.

WXcharts, an interactive weather map using Met Office data, predicts that Britons could expect snow from February 6 across northern England and Scotland.

Some snow could be seen as early as today with the Met Office predicting wintry weather over the Pennine Highlands.

The Met Office has issued a yellow rain warning covering large parts of Lancashire and Cumbria from 12pm today until 5am on Tuesday, with around 40 to 50mm possible on high ground.

It comes as the Scottish village of Kinlochlew temporarily set the UK’s January temperature record after hitting 19.6C on Sunday.

This beats the previous UK January record of 18.3C at Inchmarlo and Aboyne in 2003 and Aber in 1958 and 1971, the forecaster said.

Craig Snell, a meteorologist at the Met Office, said: “We’ve got a sort of weather front sliding across the country and that’s where the rain band is – south of it we have milder air, north of it it’s colder. “

The Met Office has warned that a huge dust cloud from the Sahara could be heading towards the UK.

Last year a similar cloud brought spectacular sunsets but drivers saw their vehicles covered in fine dust that traveled almost 5,000km from the Sahara Desert. The new plume is expected to be washed out of the atmosphere by rain falling as red dirt on Sunday evening.

A spokesman for the Met Office, posted on X: “This amazing image shows a plume of dust from the Sahara moving out of Africa and into the Atlantic. Some of this dust will reach us in the next few days…”

The temperature, if confirmed, is also the record for a winter day in Scotland.

The UK is currently facing a “three-way weather split” as different parts of the country face different conditions.

Craig Snell, a meteorologist at the Met Office, said: “We’ve got a kind of weather front sliding across the country and that’s where the rain band is – to the south of it we have the milder air, to the north it’s cold.

“So it’s going to be a cold front trying to push that milder air away. The southerly will probably not win, it will hang on to the milder air for a bit longer.”

Regions caught in the rain, including southern Scotland, northern England and much of Wales, will see heavy and persistent showers in places and feel “pretty miserable” until the morning rush hour on Tuesday, he said. Mr. Snell.

The weather system will clear out in the North Sea by Tuesday, bringing dry conditions across the country briefly.

Another weather front will then move across northern parts of the UK by Wednesday, with yellow wind warnings in place for northern Scotland, but still little rain and mild temperatures in the south.
