The royal family wished Prince Harry a happy 40th birthday using a picture of his wife Meghan Markle.
It was clear that the Duchess of Sussex was missing from the fountain wishes that appeared on the official social media of the royal family on Sunday and re-tweeted the Prince and Princess of Wales.
The message, which also included a birthday cake emoji, used a 2018 photo of Harry while still a royal at work and was taken in Dublin during a visit with Meghan.
It was the first time the royal family had shared a public message for Harry since wishing him a happy birthday in 2021.
He celebrated his milestone birthday on Sunday with Meghan and their children Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. It is then said that he is leaving for a meeting with close friends.
Harry enters his fifth decade in what has been a big year for the royal family, with the King and Princess of Wales diagnosed with cancer.
But the duke, who lives in California after stepping down from the working monarchy, remains estranged from his brother the Prince of Wales and has a strained relationship with Charles.
When the King’s shock news was announced in February, Harry made a transatlantic break to see him but his meeting with his father was only kept to 45 minutes.
In comments released to the BBC, the duke said “I was worried about 30, I’m excited about 40”, and described how fatherhood had given him a renewed sense of “making this world more better”.
Harry tried out the skeleton when he went to train the Invictus Games competitors in Canada, and took semi-royal trips to Colombia and Nigeria.
In Colombia, Meghan addressed a panel on Afro-descendant Women and Power and told how her three-year-old daughter Lili had “completely found her voice”.
The couple also relaunched their Archewell website, rebranding it as Sussex.com under the title The Office of Prince Harry and Meghan, Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
Harry traveled to London in May to celebrate the tenth anniversary of his Invictus Games and attended a service at St Paul’s Cathedral but did not meet his brother or father.
Birmingham won the bid to host the sports competition in 2027, and the duke congratulated the city on its success and hopes to attend the Games in the UK in three years’ time.
In July, Harry received the Pat Tillman Award for Service, presented by the ESPN sports channel to individuals in the world of sports, for using his platform to “change the world”.
But Tillman’s mother, Mary, expressed her dismay that “such a controversial and divisive person” had been given the honor.
In his speech, Harry praised Mrs Tillman, saying: “Her advocacy for Pat’s legacy is deeply personal and I admire her. The bond between a mother and son is eternal and overcomes even the greatest of losses.”
The duke has pursued lawsuits against tabloid newspapers over allegations of phone hacking and illegal information gathering.
Harry told an ITV documentary that his determination to take on the tabloids over phone-hacking allegations was a “central piece” in destroying his relationship with his family.
The Sunday Times reported his legal battle with the Home Office over his security and in the UK “frustration” at the King.
Harry lost a High Court challenge against the Home Office in February over a decision to change the level of his personal security when he visits the UK, but has been given the green light to appeal.
During the case, the court was told that Harry believes that his children cannot “feel at home” in the UK if they cannot “be kept safe” there and that there is a greater risk than his late mother, with “rows further racism. and extremism”.
Meghan, meanwhile, began a new venture with the soft launch of her American brand Riviera Orchard when she sent friends a limited-edition strawberry jam – although the firm struggled with its trademark efforts.
Forty photos to celebrate Harry’s 40 year milestone
Harry’s new Netflix documentary series about the world of polo will air in December.
The duke made a brief return to the UK in August for the funeral of his uncle Lord Fellowes, when he stayed at Althorp, the ancestral home of his late mother Diana, Princess of Wales.
He reportedly had no interaction with William at the church service.
