What was once a basic family hotel on the side of the road to Santa Eularia has been stylishly converted into a boutique property with plenty of charm and even more personality. The best part? The wonderfully charismatic hosts. When you stay here, you feel a bit like visiting some of your oldest friends. After buying the hotel and relocating it from Vienna to Ibiza (although they both still travel to Austria for work), they set to work bringing character and a bit of sparkle back to the finca. There are woven Moroccan baskets on cast iron shelves and huge sunbeds with pink marble covers on the pool, and there are plants everywhere. The grounds are also worth exploring: there are nooks and crannies dotted around, including a pond and a small, Japanese-inspired garden.

Ca Na Xica is a gorgeous, secluded retreat in the heart of the Ibizan countryside, surrounded by a terracotta environment, characteristic long grasses, cacti, olive and almond trees, and a lemon and orange orchard. The T-shaped seawater swimming pool is the heart of the hotel, which started as just six rooms in the main house (it now has 20), built in the style of a Spanish finca. The partially open restaurant with glass walls is also a special feature, where dishes such as langoustine with mango cakes, cooked by Josper, marinated chicken Ibiza style and tuna tartar with mango and avocado are expensive but delicious. There is plenty of space around the pool and spa to lounge.

Although this sleek hotel shows what it doesn’t say, the minimalist style is a tribute. Clean lines and neutral colors are the décor, although the outdoor pool and spa area are as close as you’ll get to polished al fresco perfection. Renowned interior designer Joan Lao was responsible for transforming the 1970s space into a modern design. Each of the seven rooms is decorated differently, although the plush interior in various shades of calm grey, white and fawn is present throughout – as well as the inevitable comfort of the king-size beds, which are all decorated in 100 percent of Ibicenco cotton. There is a restaurant with a compact but small menu; expect excellent service from the cheerful and attentive staff.

Located in San Carlos – one of Ibiza’s most bohemian villages with a spirit rooted in the 1960s – the hotel’s rural location means it is home to stunning flora. The original Can Curreu finca is more than 200 years old, and great emphasis has been placed on maintaining the hotel’s authentic, rustic style as it has expanded over the years – each suite has modern features but it is full of traditional charm. The surrounding gardens are intoxicating and the pool has plenty of sunbeds and excellent views across the green valley below. Stables on site mean young riders can explore the surrounding fields on horseback, which is as ideal as it gets.

The staff are relaxed and eager to please, though never intrusive, which suits the hotel’s private retreat vibe. Its friendly, casual demeanor hints at its history as an ordinary (albeit beautiful) family home, though it’s only the platform that stands out. Can Talaias has eight rooms; the hero is definitely the Terry Thomas circular room on the ground floor. The Girasol room is also airy and bright and suitable for families, and there are several other superior rooms, some with terraces or garden, all with good-sized and spotless bathrooms. They rely on comfort and relaxation, with cream, yellow or terracotta-hued walls and crisp but homely bed linen.

Orange and olive trees represent this Puig d’en Valls gem that blends into the Ibizan countryside with its outdoor lounge covered in a Bedouin tent, sprawling grounds, a mixture of light stone and time-washed terracotta and curved, sculptural accents. The standout feature is the 15th century watermill, an icon of rural Spain that feels perfectly at home today next to the teal infinity pool. While there aren’t many amenities, it has all the basics: an excellent restaurant, a good bar, a large parking lot, and a yoga temple. The hotel offers an intimate space with five luxurious rooms (think pebble floors and walls, decorative bamboo flowers, chunky wooden furnishings, and spa-like bathrooms), while the outdoor areas inspire dreams, with a swimming pool surrounded by style Balinese. beds, set among the tall trees and reeds that whistle in the wind and provide shelter from the midday sun. The spa can be booked for you and your partner, which feels very romantic, and the hotel’s sister hotel, Gare Du Nord, has Bistro Mondo, a great place for lunch and dinner, two minutes away.

Think bright, earthy tones with modern chairs in one corner, striking Balinese sculptures in another, and treasures collected from around the globe.
