Have you ever looked at the beauty details of a runway look and thought: “gorgeous, snazzy look, I’d love to do something with that vibe for an evening out – but how on earth can I translate that to life true?”
The answer: look at the Oscars, where celebrities (and their army of groomers) get inspiration from the catwalks and the trends that gave birth to them, and magically transform them to look completely possible. Well, you know, with the right products, the right techniques and the right expert hands.
This is where I come in – after oohing and aahing over the below the red carpet looks nothing but deadly, I put on my beauty expert cap and pulled apart how, exactly to recreate the standout features in the home.
Black eyeliner statement
Milan’s A/W 2024 runways were abuzz with models sporting more black than black eyeliner, with Gucci, Versace, Tom Ford, and Dolce & Gabbana sending models down the runway with variations on the theme from Ford’s ringed eyes to Gabbana’s smoky hazes .
Around the Oscars, Gabrielle Union, Jennifer Lawrence, Issa Rae and Hailee Steinfeld took to the lineup with gusto, all wearing different apps to match their looks. The key here isn’t the shape you choose (like the celebs, you want to make this one yours), but the product you choose – you want something that lets you apply the liner , like Vieve’s Power Ink Liner, £21, if you want a bare line, or KIKO Milano High Pigment Eyeshadow in Matte Black, £7.49, if you want a brighter look.
Body & face brightness
There will be those of you who are like me. he saw Lupita Nyong’o’s icy blue sequinned red dress and thought sublime, then zoomed in to achieve a wonderful glow that she extended the glow to her skin and hair.
This one isn’t exactly brand new – it was a big thing in the 1990s, then featured in Diesel and Giambattista Valli’s AW23 shows. Both brands went pretty heavy on the glitter, and Lupita’s version has a smaller spread. Much easier to achieve.
Try Barry M Biodegradable Body Glitter, £4.49, for fun colored glitters that will give you a similar finish, but crucially, won’t add even more plastic to the environment.
For the hair look, this was created by celebrity stylist Vernon Francois, who added No.7 OLAPLEX Bonding Oil, £28, to “enhance the overall radiance,” and increase the shine.
Mob’s wife’s hair
I hope you’re not already sick of hearing about this mob wife stuff because it’s not going away anytime soon. Look at Billie Eilish for the kind of big blow that screams Sopranos (which, by the way, was on the runways of the Christian Cowan and Alice + Olivia shows on NYFW AW24).
You can get the same level of volume and sheen using Hair by Sam McKnight Cool Girl Superlift Volumising Spray, £26, and Wow Color Dream Coat for Curly Hair Extra Shine Mystical Spray, £28 (you don’t need curly hair .for this one – just spray to add gloss).
French girl bob
This one’s on everyone, from Carey Mulligan to Sydney Sweeney to Julianne Hough to America Ferrera and Zendaya. What distinguishes it from the normal bob? It’s a little fun, a little French and unfussy. This is probably the biggest trend of the year, with celebrities clamoring to chop off their hair (see Gigi Hadid’s new look) – and it started in 2023, when AGL sent models down the runway with sculpted bobs, and Khaite chose more unhappy versions. .
The trick here is to choose the right length and texture for your face. For a bit of oomph, Living Proof Total Dry Volume & Texture Spray, £31, is excellent.
All about skin
Did Pat McGrath love Maison Margiela’s super sheen at fashion week? Of course you did. But it doesn’t look like a slap on a casual day out, does it? But skin is an important element that isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, as Emma Stone showed when she paired her classic liner and peachy-pink lips with skin that stretched and showed off her blouses.
To mimic this optional coverage, it’s important to find a foundation that’s the exact right color for your skin. Try DCYPHER – they measure your skin tone through the screen using AI technology and algorithms, meaning you’ll find something that’s the right color for your skin tone. Remember the elevator too. Emma Stone was wearing Charlotte Tilbury’s cult Hollywood Flawless Filter, £39.
Gray hair
Of course, letting your grays shine isn’t a new trend – Andie MacDowell, Helen Mirren, and Kristen Scott Thomas have been leaving their grays untouched for years. And now, looking at Jaime Lee Curtis and Tantoo Cardinal on the red carpet looking glamorous and wonderful with his natural hair color on display, but he confirmed that gray hair is enjoying something momentary. Its prominence may be part of the anti-aging movement, and JW Anderson’s recent show featured models with streaked gray hair.
Pair it with your normal makeup (Jaime is wearing Beauty Pie) to mimic this look.
Great long hair
Many who had not gone for the chop went to the other extreme and embraced long, long hair. See Margot Robbie and Anya Taylor-Joy, two people who left their hair loose and long at the Oscars. I wrote earlier in the year about this trend, which is hard to refute without putting in the time (and I should know – I’m still growing mine).
However, smooth and soft hair will help it sit the same way, and for that you need a great hair mask. Virtue Restorative Treatment Mask, £67, is one of the best I’ve found.
