One happy side effect of being in what many people consider the golden age of television (apart from, well, all very good television) is that Fashion has a capital F is not only welcomed but also expected on the Emmys red carpet. And tonight, the postponed televised awards ceremony brought more than its fair share of glitz and glamor to our small screens.
The bearAyo Edebiri continued to prove that she is the breakout style star of the moment, in a custom 3-D printed Louis Vuitton dress. Suki Waterhouse followed in Rihanna’s footsteps with a cut-out red Valentino dress that put her baby bump on full display (tied in a bow!). And Jessica Chastain had to cross our fingers and toes that Gucci Sabato De Sarno brings a better bright green dress to every red carpet.
Ahead, a top 11 look at the delayed 2023 Emmys.
Ayo Edebiri in custom Louis Vuitton
When Laverne Cox asked for an Emmy and Golden Globe winner Ayo Edebiri if she dreamed of a night like this when she was a little girl, the lower the actress replied in one way that she would: “I didn’t! I dreamed of teeth [insurance]!” But sometimes, you end up with a dental cover and a custom Louis Vuitton dress, which she admits is sure the a dream.
Edebiri has been a style star lately, and this 3-D patterned dress is just another example of her sharp eye for fun fashion that feels like it matches her cheeky sense of style and humor. As for what she likes most about the look, she said, “We’re discrete – and we love it!”
Laverne Cox in the Mugler archive
It’s rare to see a museum piece on a red carpet, and even rarer when it’s not on loan, but from the star’s personal collection. But then tonight, there was Laverne Cox, whose Mugler dress from SS 1989 was pulled from her own closet. The mermaid dress was inspired by the lost city of Atlantis, and there really is no one better suited to look like an actual ancient sea deity than Cox.
Aubrey Plaza in Loewe
It feels like Loewe Jonathan Anderson has taken over the red carpet recently. And tonight, Aubrey Plaza continued the brand’s award ceremony streak with a runway look from the house’s latest Spring 2024 show. With pins cutting through the top folds of the dress made of butter yellow fabric, Plaza looked as demure as a Rodolphe Le Meunier slice. Anderson always manages to create beauty with a playful twist, which is why his designs really feel alive in a way that most red carpet dresses don’t. Maybe it’s time for them to take a trip to the next season of it The White Lotus.
Claire Danes in Balmain
Just when we think we’ve reached peak Barbie-pink fatigue, the Fleishman is in trouble A star comes out in a rosy vintage Balmain. With a draped crisscross back and jewel buckles on the shoulders, the look feels especially heavenly and very Danes.
Jessica Chastain in custom Gucci
First, there was Taylor Swift’s metallic green Gucci dress for the Golden Globes, and now we have Jessica Chastain’s bright green Gucci dress with fringe details for the Emmys. Sabato De Sarno’s vision for the house will hopefully feature more of these green gowns. They feel like a jolt of color on the red carpet, where most stars play a little safer when it comes to their palette.
Suki Waterhouse in Valentino
Rihanna said “Free the bump” and maternity style hasn’t been the same since. Suki Waterhouse put her pregnancy on full display in a cut-out Valentino gown from the runway, slightly altered to accommodate her plus-size figure. There was also a bow tied in the middle of her waist – TikTok’s favorite trend of the moment has been featured the other day. One day, the Waterhouse baby will be able to win over the internet by captioning this photo, “Here’s me if you care,” in 20 years, because bows no doubt succeed when the trend reverses.
Jenna Ortega in Dior
Wednesday Addams wouldn’t wear a transparent Dior hoop dress with pastel floral embellishments, but we’re glad Jenna Ortega did. The tea length look is delightful which feels lighter than she usually goes for, and suits the actress perfectly.
Lizzy Caplan in the Yohji Yamamoto archive
Of course, there’s always room to watch Wednesday Addams would approval – especially if Yohji Yamamoto is an archivist. The IS Fleishman is in trouble star wore a floor-length Yamamoto 1999 dress with transparent detailing on the bust. It also looked like Janis Ian would wear a fully grown-up outfit, considering it was on the Emmys red carpet, Caplan said. Entertainment Tonight she is very much “Janis forever.”
Natasha Lyonne in Schiaparelli
The IS Poker face There’s always a star wearing Schiaparelli on the red carpet, so we have to keep adding her to the best dressed lists. At the Golden Globes last week, she went more sculpted; Tonight, she chose a sheer metallic dress from the SS24 collection with a cone bra cup detail. The look, which is fused to her body, is as effortlessly cool as she is – no easy feat.
Riley Keough in Chanel couture
Riley Keough brought the bow trend to the red carpet in a more subtle way than her Daisy Jones & The Six Costar Waterhouse, with a ribbon in her updo, rather than tied around her waist. But there was nothing low-key about her Chanel couture dress, which featured a set of printed mod shorts beneath a flowing transparent black dress. No one does shorts like Virginie Viard, and Keough makes them look elevated and super cool. But then again, what else should you expect from the granddaughter of a rock star playing a rock star?
Marla Gibbs
At 92, Dame Marla Gibbs was like a vampy vision in a shimmering black dress with sleeves that came with its own stripes, as well as a bejeweled collar and cut-out shoulders. The only thing more iconic than her looks is her decades-long career. As the five-time Emmy nominee said while appearing with Quinta Brunson, “Black don’t crack!”
