There’s no doubting Christian Horner’s impact on Formula One – from hotshot 31-year-old team principal in 2005 to unmissable cornerstone almost 20 years later. The Red Bull manager was tasked with a significant mission when he was put in charge of the energy drink giant’s strange foray into the world’s motorsport portfolio in the mid-2000s. The castle he has since built is stratospherically impressive.

Case in point was last year’s near-perfect season, winning 21 out of 22 races. It is all, perhaps, even beyond his own aspirations.

But it could all come crumbling down. As the details emerged last Monday, Horner is now subject to an investigation by Red Bull’s parent company, Red Bull GmbH, after a female colleague complained about “inappropriate behaviour”. Horner strongly denies the allegations.

Christian Horner – latest: Five things we learned from F1 2024 pre-season testing in Bahrain

It was three days of non-stop action in testing this week, as the 2024 F1 season kicked off with hundreds of laps for each driver around the Bahrain International Circuit.

Red Bull, with their bold approach to this year’s RB20, continued to set the pace from the outside, with world champion Max Verstappen leading the fastest on day one.

As for the rest of the pack, there seems to be little between the other top level contenders: Carlos Sainz was fastest for Ferrari on day two, followed by Red Bull’s Sergio Perez and Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes.

Charles Leclerc was fastest on the third and final day, with a late surge in the final session from Mercedes’ George Russell and Stake’s Zhou Guanyu putting them in the top three.

Here’s what we learned from pre-season testing in Bahrain:

Christian Horner – latest: How did the Red Bull boss get into F1?

A promising karter as a teenager, Horner raced for two years in the late 1990s for Arden in Formula 3000, then the final step before a possible F1 seat. But one moment in pre-season testing, when he couldn’t match Juan Pablo Montoya’s commitment in a high-speed corner, told him all he needed.

Montoya would go on to race F1, Horner would not. Suddenly, he retired from racing at the age of 25 and chose to cross over to the management side of the Arden team.

It was there that he quickly built his reputation, winning junior titles. But despite his relative immaturity in the motorsport management ecosystem then dominated by the sport’s elder statesmen – Bernie Ecclestone, Ron Dennis, Ross Brawn etc. – his sights were still firmly set on Formula One.

Although takeover talks with Eddie Jordan died down, at 31 Horner was the youngest team principal on the grid when he was trusted to oversee Red Bull’s entry into the sport, when co-founder of the Dietrich Mateschitz company to go into business. Motorsport by buying a Jaguar.

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has called for Red Bull’s investigation into Christian Horner to be transparent – and said the controversy was “a Formula One issue entirely”.

Horner is under investigation by the racing team’s parent company, Red Bull GmbH, after a female teammate claimed “inappropriate behaviour”.

The 50-year-old strongly denies the accusation and remains in his role as Red Bull team principal. He is in Bahrain for this week’s test three days ahead of the opening race, also in the Gulf Kingdom, on March 2.

And Horner has said that he intends to be in his position for the start of the new campaign.

“It’s clear,” Wolff said when asked to address the allegations during the lunch break on the first day of testing. “Formula One and the teams stand for inclusion, equality, fairness and diversity, and that’s not just about talking about it, but living it every day. These are just standards we set ourselves.”
