Maps show where the UK’s midweek heat will hit as 22C is forecast by the Met Office

A surprisingly warm spell is on the way this week, with temperatures expected to reach as high as 22C.

Some parts of the UK will see temperatures above 20C midweek, as the Met Office predicts a welcome high of 10C after a spell of heavy rain.

Light Atlantic air will sweep up into the UK, bringing the heat on Tuesday and Wednesday, forecasters said.

This could lead to temperatures of up to 22C in the east and south-east of England, while East Anglia and the Home Counties are expected to be very hot.

Met Office meteorologist Tom Morgan said: “Temperatures will gradually rise, probably peaking on Wednesday in the east, and we may see 20C in some spots, and no doubt 22C, probably in the east of England – so East Anglia down. towards the southeast.

“But it will be a lot milder compared to now for everyone. We could be in excess of 20C in London but the peak temperatures could be up towards the Home Counties and up to Cambridgeshire.”

He said some places will be 10C warmer on Wednesday than on Sunday, but warned that the short hot spell will not be an Indian summer, and will be replaced by rain by the weekend.

“It will not be an Indian summer – an Indian summer is a period of fine, settled weather with widespread high temperatures following a period of frost.

“We have had some frost but it will only be a day or two before we see these high temperatures.”

The west of England and most of Wales will be “quite wet” in the middle of the week, Morgan said, with strong winds and a band of heavy rain pushing eastwards across the UK on Friday.

This weekend is “looking quite unsettled”, he said, with wind and rain set to affect north-west England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
