Dad fighting for life after wife killed and daughter, 17, stabbed in horror attack

A dad is fighting for his life in hospital after his wife died and his teenage daughter was seriously injured in a triple stabbing.

Alberta Obinim, 43, died at the scene after being attacked outside the family home in Barnard Road, Gorton, on Sunday evening (August 18). Her 64-year-old husband – named locally as Baptist church leader Joshua Obinim – and the couple’s 17-year-old daughter were seriously injured in the horrific knife attack.

They were taken to hospital in critical condition. The police have confirmed that both are still receiving treatment, and Mr Obinim continues to fight for his life.

The family attended Blessed Baptist Church in Levenshulme, where Mr Obinim is the pastor. Anthony Clement, an administrator at the church, said: “We are still waiting to hear from the police and the hospital.

“As of last night, he was still in critical condition. Our thoughts and prayers go out to him.”

Mrs. Obinim, a mother of four, was killed while trying to protect family members during the knife attack in her home. With her family under attack, she is said to have given birth to a young child in her bedroom and fled the premises.

But the youth bravely saved, she was satisfied again. Eyewitnesses told how people were forced to flee from the house on Sunday evening, with some forced to escape through the window as the knife launched the vicious attack.

As screams rang out along the street, the neighbors fled from their homes. After running into the street, one woman said she and her boyfriend found a baby hiding in bushes. She quickly wrapped the youth in her arms and ran into her house.

Another neighbor described seeing the knifeman saving a girl after ‘chasing’ her down the street. The man, who gave his name as Reece, said he and his cousin had just returned from a takeaway and were sitting in his car when he heard people ‘making love’.

“I heard the neighbors saying ‘get in, get in’,” he said. “My cousin ran in the house.

“A man with a knife was chasing a girl. I said ‘leave her, she’s not worth it’. She fell and he hit her.

“I turned my car after him but the girl was in the way. He started chasing my car with the knife.”

Emergency services were called to Barnard Road at around 11.20pm on Sunday following reports that three people had been stabbed. Police, including firearms officers, and paramedics found all three seriously injured.

Police have arrested a 22-year-old man on suspicion of murder in what detectives are describing as a ‘domestic incident’. The suspect, who police say was ‘known to the victims’, was taken to hospital with ‘superficial injuries’, FEAR understands.

The brutal knife attack sent ‘shock waves through the local community’. A police cordon remains in place on Barnard Road this morning (Tuesday).

As investigations continue, pictures show crime scene tape across a stretch of road, and a white forensic tent outside a semi-detached house. Images also show bunches of flowers laid in memory of Alberta, a homemaker and member of the Manchester Ghanaian community.

A colleague, who laid white roses at the scene yesterday, said the story did not seem to be true. Others remembered Alberta for her ‘great smile’. She said to the MAN: “She was amazing, she was beautiful. I spoke to her literally last week. She was so kind and caring. It’s just a real shock. She has a beautiful family.

“She was a laugh, she was just funny. I would laugh non-stop with her. The people we looked after loved her. It was non-stop laughing with her, she was amazing.

“I want to let her family know that she was loved. Her family doesn’t understand the respect that the girls – her classmates – have for her. I don’t think anyone would have a bad word to say about her, she was beautiful, The – love her at work.”

A family friend, Ibrahim Abu, also known as Obudo, said: “She was a very nice lady, I knew her well. We all go to church together. She always talked to people and was a mother to everyone. She was always smiling,” as a friend of Derrick Wiafe described Ms. Obinim as a ‘powerful and inspirational woman’.
