Laverne Cox in the Mugler archive

It’s rare to see a museum piece on a red carpet, and even rarer when it’s not on loan, but from the star’s personal collection. But then tonight, there was Laverne Cox, whose Mugler dress from SS 1989 was pulled from her own closet. The mermaid dress was inspired by the lost city of Atlantis, and there really is no one better suited to look like an actual ancient sea deity than Cox.

Aubrey Plaza in Loewe

It feels like Loewe Jonathan Anderson has taken over the red carpet recently. And tonight, Aubrey Plaza continued the brand’s award ceremony streak with a runway look from the house’s latest Spring 2024 show. With pins cutting through the top folds of the dress made of butter yellow fabric, Plaza looked as demure as a Rodolphe Le Meunier slice. Anderson always manages to create beauty with a playful twist, which is why his designs really feel alive in a way that most red carpet dresses don’t. Maybe it’s time for them to take a trip to the next season of it The White Lotus.

First, there was Taylor Swift’s metallic green Gucci dress for the Golden Globes, and now we have Jessica Chastain’s bright green Gucci dress with fringe details for the Emmys. Sabato De Sarno’s vision for the house will hopefully feature more of these green gowns. They feel like a jolt of color on the red carpet, where most stars play a little safer when it comes to their palette.

Wednesday Addams wouldn’t wear a transparent Dior hoop dress with pastel floral embellishments, but we’re glad Jenna Ortega did. The tea length look is delightful which feels lighter than she usually goes for, and suits the actress perfectly.

Riley Keough in Chanel couture

Riley Keough brought the bow trend to the red carpet in a more subtle way than her Daisy Jones & The Six Costar Waterhouse, with a ribbon in her updo, rather than tied around her waist. But there was nothing low-key about her Chanel couture dress, which featured a set of printed mod shorts beneath a flowing transparent black dress. No one does shorts like Virginie Viard, and Keough makes them look elevated and super cool. But then again, what else should you expect from the granddaughter of a rock star playing a rock star?

Marla Gibbs

At 92, Dame Marla Gibbs was like a vampy vision in a shimmering black dress with sleeves that came with its own stripes, as well as a bejeweled collar and cut-out shoulders. The only thing more iconic than her looks is her decades-long career. As the five-time Emmy nominee said while appearing with Quinta Brunson, “Black don’t crack!”
