When and where is it taking place and who is in England’s group?

England’s draw for next year’s Euro 2024 finals is encouraging. Gareth Southgate’s side have been drawn against Slovenia, Denmark and Serbia in Group C. England reached the final in 2021 and will be top of their group.

Scotland, who qualified for the second European Championship in a row, have a tougher group. They face Germany, Switzerland and Hungary in Group A. Scotland’s first game is the tournament opener against hosts Germany on June 14.

“You can look at it on paper but the games aren’t played on paper,” Southgate said, diplomatically, after the draw. “One or two teams are willing to avoid it, certainly in the senior pots and the fours, but all the teams we play are very capable.”

When?

Euro 2024 starts on June 14, with the group stage running until June 26. The highlights run from June 29, and the final will be played on July 14 in Berlin.

How to watch TV

As has been the case for some time now, in the United Kingdom the BBC and ITV/STV will share broadcasting rights for the European Championships. The games will be split between the two broadcasters and the final will be shown on both networks.

The BBC will show England’s first two European Championship matches against Serbia and Denmark after ITV took over at least the semi-finals.

ITV picked England’s potentially decisive Group C final against Slovenia, as well as any last-16 match involving Gareth Southgate’s side and any semi-final.

The BBC will show any English quarter-final, with both channels – as always – sharing the final.

The opening game of the competition between Scotland and Germany will be hosted on ITV, while the BBC will pick up the Scots’ other Group A games, against Switzerland and Hungary.

If Wales qualify from the play-offs, the BBC will broadcast their Group D games against France and the Netherlands, with ITV showing the other against Austria.

Southgate is planning an extra break for players who reach the European finals

Gareth Southgate wants to give players involved in the European finals a “psychological break” before they meet England and to step up preparations for the tournament.

The England manager is happy that part of his Euro 2024 squad will be delayed as the Champions League final takes place on June 1, with the tournament in Germany starting two weeks later. Southgate plans to play two friendlies on home soil, possibly far from Wembley, before heading to Germany.

Before the last European Championship, in 2021, Chelsea and Manchester City players were involved in the Champions League final and later met. Players could also be involved in the final of the Europa League or the Europa Conference at the end of the campaign.

“We know what it is [the warm-up schedule] It has to look like it,” Southgate said. “It’s important that they get some sort of psychological break in between but, of course, the longer they play, the less you can really give them.”

City are defending their Champions League title, while Arsenal have ambitions to go far in the competition. Newcastle and Manchester United are not in the top two groups but could drop into the Europa League.

Southgate has previously taken his team on the road for pre-tournament friendlies, with St James’ Park mentioned as a possible venue for one of the games.
