Over the past decade, the Golden Globe Awards red carpet has been the stage for many fashion statements that ended up on Google’s most searched dress lists and were praised (or not) on Instagram, Twitter and TikTok.
Here, WWD takes a look back at some of the Golden Globes red carpet dresses that have sparked online interest over the years:
Jennifer Lawrence, 2014
Wearing a white dress with black straps by Dior, Lawrence saw her look transformed into an online meme, compared to a scene from “The Little Mermaid” and recreated with blank sheets on social media by various influencers. That year, the actress won for Best Supporting Actress for her work in “American Hustle” with David O. Russell. Now she’s nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy for “No Hard Feelings.”
Kate Hudson, 2015
One of the presenters of the Golden Globes 2015, Kate Hudson drew attention as she walked the red carpet of the event in a white Versace dress, which featured a cutout on the bodice that transitioned into a backless silhouette.
Jane Fonda, 2016
Jane Fonda was spotted at the 2016 Golden Globes wearing a dramatic silhouette. The Hollywood icon, who was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her work in “Youth,” wore a white ruffled dress by Yves Saint Laurent. Later, Fonda revealed that she chose the dress to cover her bandages from a mastectomy procedure. The actress has spoken publicly about her past battles with cancer. In 2022, she was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and later, in December of the same year, revealed that she was in remission.
Brie Larson, 2017
Brie Larson was among the most searched names from the Golden Globes 2017 ceremony on Google. Larson, who wore a red Rodarte dress with beautiful details on the bodice, presented the Golden Globe for Best Actor to Casey Affleck for “Manchester by the Sea.”
Issa Rae, 2018
Rocking Angelina Jolie’s high cleavage, Issa Rae wore a flowing black chiffon dress by Prabal Gurung that was praised by her fans online. Nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy Row for “Insecure.”
Lady Gaga, 2019
Leave it to Lady Gaga to create a viral fashion moment. The singer wore a dramatic blue Valentino gown on the 2019 Golden Globes red carpet. Gaga was nominated for Best Actress and Best Original Song for her work on “A Star Is Born.” In the end she only took home the second one, and Glenn Close was awarded Best Actress for “The Wife.”
Regina King, 2019
Regina King made sure to shine on the 2019 Golden Globes red carpet in her sparkling pink Alberta Ferretti gown. That night, King won Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture for her work on “If Beale Street Could Talk.”
Patricia Arquette, 2019

Selena Gomez, 2023
Selena Gomez was the latest star to wear a dramatic Valentino gown on the Golden Globes red carpet this year. Gomez, who was nominated for Best Actress in a Television Series Musical or Comedy for “Only Murders in the Building,” received another nomination for the same project last week.
The 2024 Golden Globe Awards are scheduled for January 7 at 8 pm ET and are produced by Dick Clark Productions, which is owned by WWD parent Penske Media Corp.
