Designers and celebrities aren’t the only trendsetters – many fashion trends have spawned movies and TV shows: take it straight from this year’s Golden Globe nominees.
After breaking box office records, “Barbie” leads the list with 10 nominations, meanwhile several television categories were swept with nine and four nods each, respectively, with hit dramas such as “Succession ” and “The Crown”. Some of the biggest trends on the screen have also been transferred to the real world, with Barbiecore leaving its mark on fashion and beauty and quiet luxury to guide those of all classes to the Roy family’s penchant for minimalist dressing.

Ahead, WWD breaks down the Golden Globe-worthy inspiration behind some of this year’s biggest fashion moments.
“Barbie”
After Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie were first spotted filming “Barbie” in Los Angeles, Barbiecore took the internet (and naturally, the fashion world) by storm for an entire year before hitting theaters. The all-pink aesthetic, inspired by Mattel’s beloved dolls, emphasizes bold masculinity. Sky-high platforms, heart-shaped purses and matching sets are all at the height of Barbiecore; The trend could even be seen on the runways of Valentino, Chanel and Versace.
TikTok and Google search for everything inspired by Barbiecore in 2022 and 2023, with several brands including Zara, Crocs and Nyx launching Barbie-themed collaborations pegged to the release of the film. During the “Barbie” press tour, Robbie took things to new heights by channeling some of the doll’s iconic looks, all styled by stylist Andrew Mukamal.
“Barbie” is one of the main Golden Globe nominees this year. The film received a total of 10 nods including Best Picture (Musical or Comedy), Best Director (Motion Picture) for Greta Gerwig and Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy) for Robbie.
“succession”
“Succession” may have taken its final bow this year, but the trends set by its divine cast of characters are becoming endless. Quiet luxury, also known as stealth wealth, replaces the ostentatious displays with subtle high-end staples, subtle accents and logo prints that are sometimes associated with the wealthy.
The wardrobes of Shiv, Logan and the rest of the Roy brood put this minimalist trend back on the map after it had a big moment in the ’90s. Google searches for “quiet luxury,” “stealth wealth” and “old money style” spiked after the HBO drama’s season four premiere. It was also replicated by labels such as Fendi, Christian Dior and Armani Privè in 2023.
“Succession” has nine Golden Globes including Best Television Series (Drama) and Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series (Drama) for Sarah Snook.
“The Crown”
The late Princess of Wales was a constant source of sartorial inspiration, so it’s no surprise that Diana’s fashions saw a huge revival after Elizabeth Debicki’s portrayal in “The Crown.”
Sportswear retailer Mitchell & Ness has recreated the Philadelphia Eagles jacket Diana wore throughout the ’80s and ’90s. The bomber, already sold out, priced at $400, is now reselling for double the original cost. A version of the jacket signed by Kylie Kelce, wife of Eagles center Jason Kelce, even fetched $100,000 at auction in November.
Promotional images for the final season of “The Crown” showed Debicki in a teal one-piece swimsuit reminiscent of one worn by Diana in 1997. According to Google, searches for “one-piece swimsuit” spiked in the weeks after the first performance of the show. Meanwhile, traffic in searches for “blue swimming” increased almost tenfold.
“The Crown” scored Debicki four Golden Globe nominations including Best Television Series (Drama) and Best Supporting Actor (Television).
“Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour”
Leave it to Taylor Swift to make friendship bracelets cool again. The trend refers to a lyric from one of her songs, “You’re Yourself, Kid.”
Swift’s “Eras Tour” had fans around the world getting crafty, stringing together beaded bracelets, which were usually traded between “Swifties” at shows. This concert tradition spread to theaters when “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” made its silver screen debut. The documentary is nominated in one of the Golden Globes’ newest categories, Cinematic Achievement and Box Office.
“The Color Purple”
The title of the film says it all: The reboot of “The Color Purple”, out this Christmas, has already created a craze for violet colors thanks to producer Oprah Winfrey. “Okay, you’ve all seen the trailer, and I’m giving you six months to get your costume together for opening day,” Winfrey said in an Instagram video earlier this year. “Everything purple.”
Several designers including Prabal Gurung, Altuzarra and LaQuan Smith took part in the purple trend this year, sending lilac, lavender and mauve shades down the runway. The trend has also taken off on the red carpet, with several stars following Winfrey’s lead at the film’s world premiere in Los Angeles.
“The Color Purple” is up for two Golden Globes, with Fantasia Barrino and Danielle Brooks nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy) and Best Supporting Actress (Motion Picture), respectively.
“Air”
“Air” may not have replicated the box office success of 2023 like “Barbie” or “Oppenheimer,” but critics praised it for its depiction of Nike’s rise following the release of the Air Jordan sneaker.
The high-end shoes were cultivated long before the release of “Air,” but the increase in Jordan sales this year can be partially correlated to the latest collaboration between Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. Nike released its year-end fiscal statistics in September, revealing that Air Jordans accounted for 12.9 percent of the brand’s sales in 2023: total revenue of more than $6.5 billion.
“Air” is up for two Golden Globes, Best Picture (Musical or Comedy) and Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy) for Damon.
