The latest news
England stars will play the second half of Tuesday night’s friendly against Belgium without any names on the back of their shirts to raise awareness for the Alzheimer’s Society.
The names will disappear from England players’ shirts when they return to the pitch after half-time, drawing attention to how people with dementia can lose memories, including the names of some of football’s biggest stars.
Tuesday night’s match at Wembley is dedicated to ‘Alzheimer’s Society International’, as part of the Football Association’s official charity partnership, pointing out that football should be unforgettable.
A report last year claimed that footballers had a 1.6 increased risk of Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia than the general population, which was linked to heading the ball.
This is not the first time England have worn shirts without a name, as they were also seen at the first Alzheimer’s Association international against Switzerland in 2022.
Kate Lee, Chief Executive of the Alzheimer’s Association: “We hope this great gesture on the players’ shirts will get fans across the country talking and thinking about the signs and symptoms of dementia.
“By using football to shine a spotlight and raise awareness of the signs of dementia, we hope to not only encourage fans to donate to our research into early diagnosis, but also to support their loved ones as well as those who support them with their football team. This means taking the crucial first steps to seek a diagnosis if they suspect someone they care for may be affected. A diagnosis can be scary but it’s better to know.”
